VIDEO: What The Bible Says About The World

This video is an excerpt from our full-length teaching entitled: The Mystery of the Kingdom.

There are two primary Greek words used for the English word “world” in the New Testament. One word translated as the word “world” is “kosmos.” This word literally means an “ordered system” (like the universe, creation). The word “kosmos” appears 186 times in the New Testament.

(The other word translated as “world” is “aión,” which refers to a space of time, an age. The word “aión” is not the topic of this video.)

Perhaps the most popular instance of this Greek word “kosmos” appears in John 3:16, which reads: “For God so loved the world (“kosmos”) that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”

Interestingly, Jesus Christ also referred to the devil as the ruler of this “kosmos” in John 14:30. “I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world (“kosmos”) is coming, and he has nothing in Me.”

A few of the other references to the word “world” in the Bible include:

The spirit of the “kosmos”
1 Corinthians 2:12

The wisdom of the “kosmos”
1 Corinthians 3:9

The way of the “kosmos”

1 John 2:15

1 Corinthians 1:21

John 7:7

Friendship with the “kosmos” is enmity with God
James 4:4

You cannot love both the “kosmos” and God
1 John 2:15

Our faith overcomes the “kosmos”
1 John 5:4

The “kosmos” cannot receive God’s spirit
John 14:17

the “kosmos” hated Christ

God’s kingdom is not of this “kosmos”

So too, the Apostle John writes:

“We know that we are from God, and the whole world (“kosmos”) lies in the power of the evil one.” (1 John 5:19)
