America is a spiritually sick and diseased country. But this is not what makes it unique.
What makes America unique is its swelling pride.
Americans are proud of their heritage…
Proud of their country…
Proud of their forefathers…
Proud of their achievements…
Proud of their global leadership role…
Proud of their founding documents…
Proud of their laws…
Put simply, Americans are quite possibly the most “proud” people on the face of the planet.
This is unfortunate as the Bible makes it explicitly clear that such pride is a great sin.
“For if anyone thinks he is something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself.” – Galatians 6:3
“Thus says the Lord: “Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches…” (Jeremiah 9:23)
“God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” (James 4:6)
“For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy.” (2 Timothy 3:2)
“Pride and arrogance and the way of evil and perverted speech I hate.” (Proverbs 8:13)
America cannot have it both ways. No one can serve two masters. Americans can worship God or they can worship themselves.
We can choose the way of the cross, which is a road marked by extreme humility and self-denial… or we can choose to pay great adulation to our own temporal achievements.
But it cannot be both.
American Christians who believe to the contrary are in great danger of deception.
